Accessible video and moving media - creating films that reach everyone

Would you like to learn about the requirements for making videos accessible? Are you involved in film, animation, or working with moving images? This course will teach you everything you need to know to make a video accessible. Our self-paced course provide a basic overview, and you can enhance your understanding by choosing a complementary, instructor-led course session.

This course is designed for those who create video content and those who are clients where the content is to be published on the web or in social media.

To gain the most from this course, we recommend that you first take the course Introduction to accessibility.


About the course

We will go through the different parts of an accessible video, look at the legal requirement and go through the parts of the WCAG guidelines that are relevant for videos.

Different tools for creating a video will not be covered. The course aims to enhance your understanding and give you advice so that you know what needs to be done to make videos accessible.


Course content

The course covers, among other things:

  • Subtitling (subtitles and captions).
  • Verbalisation and audio description.
  • Film description
  • Techniques for creating an accessible video.

After completing this course

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the legal requirements for video accessibility.
  • Learn how to select and use video players that support accessibility features.
  • Develop the skills to write clear and concise video descriptions that help users understand the content and context of the video.
  • Learn the techniques of subtitling and audio description to make visual content accessible to people with hearing and visual impairments.
  • Learn how to integrate accessibility considerations into every stage of the video production process.

How is the course delivered?

The course consists of two parts; a recorded course followed by a teacher-led one-day live session.

With this self-paced course, you get a basic overview, but also the opportunity to focus on selected areas that you have a particular need for. You can access the course when it suits you. The course is divided into parts - take one or more at a time. You can also use the course as a knowledge base; the search function makes it easy to find what you need.
