This course is aimed at those who work with documents in Microsoft Word for internal and external use on digital platforms and websites.

About the course

During the course, you will not only learn the technical aspects of accessible document production in Word, but also how to think about content, structure and images to get the best possible foundation. We will also go through complex applications such as accessibility in forms and tables in preparation for post-processing in Adobe Acrobat Pro.

After completing the course, you will have the knowledge to build accessible documents directly from scratch in Word.

During the course, you will learn how to:

  • Build an accessible document template from scratch.
  • Apply structure with headings, lists, tables of contents.
  • Create customised stylesheets for design flexibility.
  • Create accessible multi-level lists with numbered headings.
  • Design tables for accessibility and usability.
  • Design accessible forms.
  • Work with internal and external links.
  • Get an overview on how to write alt text for images, charts and graphics.
  • Colour contrasts and colour blindness, tools and techniques.
  • Available fonts and sentence structures.
  • Managing footnotes, endnotes and instructions.
  • Understand the accessibility check in Word.
  • Some post-processing in Adobe Acrobat Pro related to Word.
  • Review of the accessibility check in Acrobat.
  • Manual testing with assistive technology.

After completing this course

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Build and structure accessible document templates.
  • Create complex, multi-level lists and accessible tables.
  • Design accessible forms and manage links.
  • Ensure proper color contrasts and font choices.
  • Manage footnotes, endnotes, and language settings.
  • Perform accessibility checks and post-work in Adobe Acrobat Pro.

The course consists of two parts; a self-paced course followed by an optional live session taught by a Funka accessibility expert.

With this self-paced course, you get a basic overview, but also the opportunity to focus on selected areas that you have a particular need for. You can access the course when it suits you. The course is divided into parts - take one or more at a time. You can also use the course as a knowledge base; the search function makes it easy to find what you need.
