A tool to measure accessibility
Ayond is an ICT business focusing on innovation and user-centered design. Because of this it is not surprising that they are also one of the winners of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority’s (PTS) innovation competition ”Best in business”. Funka acts as subcontractor and contributes with specific knowledge in accessibility.
We appreciate the opportunity to do this in collaboration with Funka’s experts, says Thomas Arctaedius, CEO of Ayond. Accessibility is something that many of our clients need help with and we believe that a tool can make a big difference.
There are many tools available for measuring various things on the web. Some of these have been developed to specifically measure accessibility, but most cover a broader range of functions. Some are for developers to control their code, others to help web editors notice broken links and missing ALT-texts. There are tools to help designers check colors and contrasts and there are tools to help public institutions check how well a website meets requirements and regulations.
But there are findings in several different research projects pointing to significant quality issues among existing tools. At the same time increasing accessibility demands cause more and more to ask for help and support. No matter how many accessibility experts we educate there will always be a need for more. A good tool would help make parts of the accessibility work significantly more effective.
There is a point in working with another company who are not all accessibility nerds, says Andreas Cederbom, Head of Analysis at Funka. It will be very exciting to see how far we can get.
PTS’s innovation competition is open to businesses and organisations and offers an opportunity to develop new solutions or to further improve existing ones in order for more people, no matter their abilities, to be able to take advantage of opportunities provided by the digitalisation.
